NRK Correspondent Present During Attack on Nairobi Press Conference

Vegard Tjørholm, Africa correspondent for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), was present at a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday afternoon when the event was disrupted by armed individuals.

According to Tjørholm, the assailants forced entry by breaking through an iron gate and accessed the premises of Kenya Human Rights, the location where the press conference was being held. Tjørholm has confirmed that he was unharmed during the incident.

No injuries were reported as a result of the attack. However, several laptops were stolen. It is believed that the intention behind the intrusion was to intimidate activists and discourage them from participating in demonstrations.

The press conference was organized by the group "Kenyan Mothers," which advocates for reduced use of force by police during protests. Tjørholm reported that the attackers arrived at the scene on motorcycles.

Some activist organizations in Kenya allege that criminal groups are sometimes paid by senior police officials and politicians to target peaceful demonstrators. Such claims highlight ongoing concerns about the safety of activists and the environment for civil society in the country.
