Three Radio Journalists Arrested in Niger

Three journalists from the private radio station Sahara FM have been detained in Niger following their reporting on the alleged termination of security agreements between Niger and Russia, according to the station's owner speaking to AFP. The journalists were initially arrested on Thursday and subsequently brought before a court. Although they were released, reports indicate that they were re-arrested by police on Saturday, as stated by the station's director.

Niger has been under military rule since a coup took place on July 26, 2023. The political climate in the country has raised concerns regarding press freedom. Recently, Reporters Without Borders released its press freedom index for 2025, ranking Niger 83rd out of 180 countries, a decline of three positions from the previous year.
