Cervical Cancer Could Be Eradicated in Denmark by 2040

According to a recent announcement from the Danish Cancer Society, cervical cancer may be effectively eradicated in Denmark by the year 2040, with projections indicating a significant decrease in the number of cases. Janne Bigaard, a senior physician and project manager at the organization, noted that cervical cancer was the third most common cancer among women in the 1960s, but it has since fallen to the thirteenth position.

This positive trend is attributed to increased uptake of the HPV vaccine and greater participation in cervical cancer screening programs. Denmark is approaching the threshold set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the elimination of cervical cancer, which is defined as fewer than four cases per 100,000 women.

In neighboring Norway, the government has also set ambitious goals, aiming to eliminate cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers within the next decade, as outlined in a new cancer strategy released in February.
