UN Warns of Depleting Humanitarian Supplies in Gaza

The United Nations has issued a stark warning regarding the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza, where essential supplies are rapidly running out due to an ongoing blockade imposed by Israel. This blockade, which has been in effect for eleven days, has severely restricted the flow of aid into the region. Additionally, over the weekend, Israel further curtailed electricity supplies to Gaza, intensifying the humanitarian crisis.
This action is part of Israel's strategy to compel Hamas to agree to modifications in a ceasefire agreement that was established on January 19. Tom Fletcher, the UN's humanitarian chief, emphasized the dire consequences of the blockade, stating, "Eleven days is far too long and is preventing aid from reaching civilians who desperately need it." He highlighted the alarming depletion of supplies, noting that the situation is deteriorating rapidly.
Fletcher pointed out that the lack of fuel is particularly concerning, as it has led to the shutdown of incubators in hospitals, putting vulnerable patients at risk. Having visited Gaza in February, he described the conditions he witnessed as significantly worse than he had anticipated. One of the most distressing sights was the presence of animals scavenging for food among the ruins of bombed buildings, illustrating the extent of the crisis. "The people were incredibly thin," he remarked, underscoring the severe impact on the local population.
