How to help a cautious child build confidence

Hi! I have a 5-year-old who’s very cautious and hesitant to try new things. This becomes especially noticeable in winter. While all the other kids are outside sledding, mine prefers to just watch.

Before Christmas, she was enjoying sledding, but after a minor “crash” where she fell in the snow (it wasn’t painful or serious, but she didn’t like getting snow on her), she refuses to sled now. It’s so sad to see because I know how much fun she has when she dares to try.

I’m struggling with how to handle this as a parent. I don’t want to push her too hard, but at the same time, I don’t want to reinforce her fears by avoiding these situations.

Her caution extends to other activities like biking, skiing, swimming—basically anything that requires her to step outside her comfort zone.

Has anyone dealt with a child like this? What’s the best way to support and encourage her without overwhelming her? I’d love to hear your advice and experiences!
